The European Young Bar Association (EYBA) is a non-profit making, multinational young lawyers association founded on 23rd May 1993 in Prague. The group now represents the interests of over 200,000 young lawyers and is the worlds largest young lawyers group. The group was established to encourage links between and to promote the interests and welfare of young lawyers throughout geographical Europe. The EYBA is unique in that it is the first time that representative young lawyers' groups such as Young Bars, Young Solicitors Groups and other young lawyers forums from around Europe have joined together. At formation the EYBA had 18 member associations, formalising informal relations which had existed between many city young lawyers' groups over a number of years. The fact that members of the EYBA are generally city based rather than national young lawyers' (although not to the exclusion of such groups) reflects the reality of the bar structures across the majority of Europe where it is generally the City Bar rather than the National Bar that is most relevant to local lawyers. The number of member groups is increasing and currently includes almost 60 groups across geographical Europe. One of the most important features of the group is that it arranges invitations to member group events for the benefit of other member groups thereby allowing interaction and networking and also represents members further afield with groups from The United States, Australia and Canada amongst others. The EYBA also represents its members in discussions/liaison with external bodies such as the International Bar Association (IBA) of which EYBA is a sustaining member , European Bar Federation (FBE) and The Council of the Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE). We have taken part in the activities of the CCBE and the IBA. The EYBA publishes a journal- the "EUROlawyer™", distributed to its Member Groups free of charge. You will find articles from the latest issue on this website. We actively seek articles concerning the Member Groups' activities and events. The EYBA organises various seminars throughout the year both hosted by EYBA exclusively and also EYBA seminars are held at member group events such as Annual General Meetings and other International Rentrees. Previouseminars have been held in Latvia and Lithuania during the Baltics Tour between 1-8 July 2001, as well as AGM in Dublin, Bled, Vilnius, Edinburgh and European Committees in London. Past seminars have included : Riga, Latvia, in September 1999, Belfast, Ireland in March 2000 and Portorose, Slovenia May 2000. The organisation also sees its members meet regularly at annual rentrees in Paris, Barcelona, The Hague, Utrecht and other destinations. We have also hosted trips to EU institutions to Brussels and elsewhere. If you or your Member Group wishes to organise a seminar in co-ordination with the EYBA please go to the events pages and then get in contact with an Executive Committee Member or the EYBA Administrator. The EYBA has also established a twinning programme between member groups creating links between groups from Central and Eastern Europe and groups from Western Europe. Each EYBA member group has a representative on the European Committee which meets twice a year, in closed forum at the Annual General Meeting held in May and also at a dedicated European Committee Meeting held in October/November every year. Where young lawyers in a particular city do not have a representative association, the EYBA has been instrumental in the formation of new young lawyers' groups. We are currently undertaking to assist in the formation of a number of new member groups, assisting them in the formulation of constitutions and committee structures. In general the Annual Meetings alternate between West and Eastern Europe with meetings previously having been hosted in Prague, Amsterdam, Budapest, Copenhagen, Warsaw, Killarney, Bologna, Dublin, Vilnius, Bled, and Edinburgh. The potential for the organisation is enormous. It represents the interests of over 200,000 young lawyers throughout Europe. We are especially pleased to welcome new member groups from Central and Eastern Europe. |
